How to Install Silksong mods on the Steam Deck

Having a tough time with Hollow Knight: Silksong? These mods will help.

Why Mods?

Hollow Knight: Silksong is a beautiful game with an engaging story, but it’s a very difficult game to play. It requires a lot of precise movement and memorization to defeat enemies and progress. Not everyone has the ability or the patience to get through the game. These PC mods allow you to change the game to your liking by adjusting aspects of the game and make it easier to get through. Some changes are: deal more damage to enemies, take less damage from enemies, infinite health, or unlock abilities early.

It’s like adding an easy mode to a game that doesn’t have it.

The Process

This is a quick outline on how to install mods. The video below walks through the process.

  1. Purchase the game on Steam and install the game to your Steam Deck.
  2. Switch to Desktop mode.
  3. Go to Nexus Mods and download these two mods
  4. Unzip the BepInEx download. Then place the folder and four files into the Hollow Knight: Silksong install directory. The mod manager is set up!
  5. Unzip the Simple Cheats download. Place the two files in BepInEx/plugins folder you just copied above. The Simple Cheats mod is installed!
  6. Return to Game Mode.
  7. Edit Silksong’s Properties in the Settings menu.
  8. Under General, copy this command into the launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
  9. Under Compatibility, check “Force the use of a specific Steam Play Compatibility tool.” Then select the newest Proton version. I used “Proton 9.0-4.”
  10. Launch the game.
  11. While playing the game, push the tilde (~) key to bring up Simple Cheats. You can change a bunch of things in the game to make things easier. I enabled:
    • Always Active - the Compass to always be on
    • Always Active - the Magnetite Brooch to be on
    • Balance - 2x damage multiplier so I hit twice as hard

Other BepInEx compatible mods install the same way. The Steam Deck install process also works on Windows, just ignore the Proton and launch options step.
